United Nations Ends Restrictions on President of Syria Before White House Visit
Security Council representatives gave the green light to a US resolution to lift sanctions on Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa prior to his presidential meeting the following week.
He became provisional head of state after leading a rebel offensive that removed the former president in the final month of 2024, concluding thirteen long years of domestic strife.
The US representative Mike Waltz at the United Nations stated the United Nations delivered "an emphatic political statement" that recognised Syria was in "a fresh chapter" since Assad was deposed.
Previously, he faced global penalties in his role as head of the religious organization the HTS movement, which was formerly linked to the extremist organization. America delisted the group from its registry of foreign terror groups during July.
Further Restrictions Lifted
Additionally, the United Nations lifted restrictions targeting Syria's Interior Minister Anas Khattab.
The Syrian diplomatic chief welcomed the removal of these restrictions, declaring through digital channels: "Syria expresses its appreciation to Washington and supportive states for assisting of Syria and its people."
Upcoming White House Meeting
Sharaa's White House visit at the start of the week occurs subsequent to American leader Donald Trump remarked that Sharaa demonstrated "substantial headway" in establishing peace to the war-torn country.
Both presidents held discussions initially this past May, during Trump's Riyadh trip while traveling through Arab nations.
After that meeting, America's leader characterized Sharaa as a "tough guy" with a "very strong past".
The HTS organization he led operated as the terrorist network's partner within Syria until he severed ties during 2016.
Prior United States Journey
This week's diplomatic engagement does not represent Sharaa's first trip to the US in the current year. This past fall, he became the pioneering Middle Eastern head of state to present to the United Nations gathering in Manhattan for nearly six decades.
In his speech, he stated the country had been "restoring its proper position among the nations of the world" and demonstrated unity with Palestinian citizens in Gaza.
