The Game UN:Me: A Cerebral Thriller Merging Survival Horror and Social Deduction Mechanics
The recent Day of the Devs online presentation revealed a number of fascinating future games, but one especially has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience appears to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.
"It's a unique experience where a girl harboring multiple personalities inside her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the mind," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Fractured Consciousness
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of high school age. Within her exist four separate personas, all possessing their own fears and drives. These entities can seize control spontaneously, unleashing their deep-seated phobias upon her without warning.
Based on showcased footage, much of the action takes place within a creepy medical facility, though additional clips depict the protagonist exploring a desolate church.
A World of Personal Horror
"What makes you afraid of? What makes you uncomfortable?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. Authority figures. Things that seem trivial to other people can trigger something primal inside us. This game delves into that idea — anxieties that are specific to every individual."
The central mechanic involves managing whichever soul emerges at any given time. However, these souls will change against your will during gameplay. While exploring, each soul's anxieties become exaggerated and attack the protagonist one after another. As the persona shifts, so does the specific fear the player encounters.
Unsettling Aesthetics and a Fatal Choice
At first glance, UN:Me shares noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is populated by nurses who all share the same face, with disturbingly broad grins. Patients in the waiting room have enormous flowers growing from their heads should be. Flowers are an ever-present theme, juxtaposing natural beauty with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique mechanic. Players must determine which of the four souls haunting the heroine is the "true" one. "Each of the personas claims that the physical form is rightfully them," explains a creator. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is authentic."
Once players have deduced a soul is fake, they must eliminate it. However, since each soul can lie or obfuscate the truth, it is very easy to choose incorrectly.
"Perhaps you've already eliminated the real [soul] by your own actions," a voice suggests. "The final entity remaining could be a fake. In any case, your decisions are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed launch window, but it is can be wishlist on digital storefronts.
