The Devastating Shift Just One Year Has Brought in America
One year ago, the landscape was completely different. Prior to the American presidential vote, reflective residents could acknowledge the nation's serious imperfections – its inequities and inequality – however they could still identify it as the United States. A democracy. A place where legal governance carried weight. A country headed by a dignified and ethical leader, even with his older age and growing weakness.
Currently, this autumn, countless Americans barely recognize the country we live in. Individuals believed to be undocumented migrants are detained and pushed into vehicles, sometimes refused legal rights. The left side of the presidential residence – is undergoing demolition for a grotesque event space. Donald Trump is targeting his opponents or supposed enemies and insisting federal prosecutors surrender a huge total of public funds. Uniformed troops are being sent across metropolitan centers with deceptive justifications. The military command, rebranded the War Department, has practically liberated itself of routine media oversight as it spends what could amount to nearly $1tn in public funds. Universities, legal practices, news companies are submitting due to presidential intimidation, and wealthy elites are treated like aristocracy.
“The United States, just months before its 250th birthday as the planet's foremost free society, has crossed the brink into autocracy and fascism,” a noted author, stated in August. “In the end, more quickly than I thought feasible, it occurred here.”
Every morning starts to new horrors. And it is hard to comprehend – and agonizing to acknowledge – just how far gone we are, and how quickly it unfolded.
However, we know that Trump was duly elected. Following his highly troubling previous administration and despite the cautions linked to the understanding of the conservative plan – following Trump himself declared plainly he intended to be a dictator solely at the start – sufficient voters chose him rather than his Democratic opponent.
As terrifying as the present situation are, it’s even scarier to understand that we have only been three-quarters of a year under this leadership. Where will an additional three years of this downfall position us? And what if the three years transforms into something even longer, since there is no one to limit this president from deciding that another term is required, possibly for national security reasons?
Certainly, all is not lost. There will be congressional elections next year that could bring a different balance of power, should Democrats recapture the Senate or House of the legislature. There are government representatives who are striving to exert a degree of oversight, such as Democratic congressmen who are launching an investigation regarding the effort to money grab from legal authorities.
And a presidential election in 2028 could begin our journey toward restoration precisely as last year’s election set us on this disappointing trajectory.
There exist countless citizens marching in urban areas of their cities, as they did in the past days at democracy demonstrations.
An ex-cabinet member, stated lately that “the dormant powerhouse of the nation is rising”, similar to past post-McCarthyism in that decade or amid the Vietnam war protests or in the Watergate scandal.
In those instances, the listing ship ultimately corrected itself.
Reich says he understands the signals of that awakening and observes it occurring now. As support, he cites the large-scale demonstrations, the extensive, cross-party resistance to a television host's removal and the largely united defiance by media to accept military mandates they solely cover approved content.
“The dormant force consistently stays asleep till specific greed becomes so noxious, an specific act so contemptuous of societal benefit, specific cruelty so disruptive, that it is compelled but to awaken.”
It's a positive outlook, and I appreciate Reich’s experienced view. Possibly he may turn out correct.
In the meantime, the big questions remain: is the US able to regain its footing? Is it possible to restore its standing globally and its adherence to legal principles?
Or do we need to admit that the historical project functioned for a period, and then – swiftly, totally – ended?
My negative thoughts tells me that the latter is correct; that everything might be gone. My hopeful heart, nevertheless, tells me that we need to strive, through all methods we can.
In my case, as an observer of the press, that’s about urging journalists to live up, more thoroughly, to their mission of holding power to account. For some people, it could mean participating in congressional campaigns, or planning demonstrations, or finding ways to safeguard ballot privileges.
Under twelve months back, we existed in a very different place. In the future? Or three years from now? The reality is, we cannot predict. All we can do is to attempt to persevere.
What Provides Me Hope Now
The interaction I encounter with students with young journalists, that are simultaneously idealistic and realistic, {always
