Senegal's Rising Talent Camara: From Dreams to Tournament Favorites.
When I walk into the space, the young midfielder picks up a soccer ball he clings to throughout our chat. It’s a powerful symbol for a dream he has always held onto. “I only wanted football; I was focused solely on that,” states the AS Monaco and Senegal playmaker.
His determination and raw talent won over teams such as Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. Yet, the most difficult person to convince didn't come from a sporting director or coach, but his own father. “He was against me playing soccer simply because he hadn’t seen me play,” says Camara.
Surmounting Early Hurdles
Eventually, on “one beautiful day,” he received his dad's approval to chase his path in the game. A further barrier was his small stature, which deterred his hometown team Casa Sports from giving him a contract.
Nevertheless, the famed academy – the institution that produced stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. After he earned the MVP in a regional tournament, the scouts were “astonished” to learn he was without a contract. They acted quickly. “I was taken directly to the academy. They didn’t want me from going back home,” Camara said.
An Unforgettable Season and Continental Arrival
That decision set him on a pathway to Europe. His breakthrough came in 2023, “an unforgettable year,” which began with him lifting the CHAN trophy. Just weeks later, despite fatigue, he played in the Under-20s Afcon, guiding his nation to the title and earning player of the tournament.
A month later, he signed for FC Metz, emulating Mané. “Settling in wasn't a challenge,” states the youngster. He resides by himself in Europe, a situation his family encourage to keep him focused.
Inspiration and On-Field Identity
Off-field noise aren't a concern for Camara, who draws inspiration from Kevin De Bruyne’s “modesty” and superb skills. He is also a huge fan of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His ball striking and accuracy from set pieces are key strengths. He admits a need to control his aggression, after being shown red early in his tenures at both Metz and Monaco. “It is a habit that is following me!” he jokes.
Life at Monaco, Mentors and Upcoming Goals
At Monaco, he values learning from veterans such as Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I told myself we are fortunate,” he said.
Currently, his focus is firmly on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – we can’t hide from that. After defeating England on their soil…,” he states, referencing a historic 3-1 win in Nottingham.
Regarding a future move to the English top flight, he remains committed to Monaco for now. “I am very at ease here,” he affirms. However, he's often ribbed by icon El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. Camara jokes, yet remains determined about targeting the senior top prize down the line.
“We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. Having beaten England at Wembley… it instills confidence.”
Moving forward, Lamine Camara combines a modest start, unwavering focus, and grand ambitions targeting to lead Senegal to Afcon success and forge his own lasting legacy in the world of football.
