Scream Original Star the Actor Fears He Could Spoil the Franchise with the Seventh Installment.
The highly anticipated slasher sequel Scream 7 is scheduled to debut in theaters next year, and it is gearing up for a major family reunion. This new chapter signals the iconic comeback of Neve Campbell as survivor Sidney Prescott, after sitting out the previous film. She will, as usual, be joined by Courtney Cox as journalist Gail Weathers, but they won't be the only beloved characters making a comeback.
"Returning to a role you portrayed in your mid-20s when you're 55 was a daunting task that kept me up at night," Lillard reveals.
An Unexpected Return for Fallen Characters
Reports have confirmed that three distinct characters from earlier films are set to return in this new outing, even though meeting their demise in prior movies. The exact mechanism of their return remains a mystery. Fans should prepare for the reappearance of the endearing and seemingly immortal cop Dewey Riley, the director and third film killer Roman Bridger, and a member of the original murderous duo, Stu Macher.
The Weight of Iconic Status
For Matthew Lillard, returning to the series for the first occasion since a small appearance is a dream come true, even if he is apprehensive about the public's reaction. The actor clearly remembers the exact moment he got the news from the series creator.
"I remember the phone call. I recall the pleasantries. I recall him posing the question. That instance is indelibly imprinted on my mind," he states. "So I'm incredibly honored to be back. I'm thrilled to be back."
Stu Macher has achieved iconic status in the decades since the original film premiered, which made Lillard feeling very trepidatious.
"Truthfully, that's a part that lives in infamy, for better or worse," he notes. "A part that is now embodied in every single Ghostface mask that appears every Halloween."
The Fear of Letting Down the Fans
Now that production has wrapped, Lillard is waiting like the rest of us to see the final product. He confesses to feeling immense anxiety about not wanting to be the one who ruins the popular franchise.
"It's either a hit and people are thrilled to have you, or it's a fail," Lillard points out. "At the start, I have no idea if the film will gonna work. I don't know if people are eager to see me. I've certainly seen enough people come out and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they going back to this trope?' So the reality is that I feel a lot of responsibility to not ruin the franchise. I don't want people exiting Scream 7 and thinking, 'Well, that sucked, and Matthew Lillard was the cause.'"
Theories and Excitement Run High
While many dedicated fans are excited for Stu's return, the central mystery of how he and the others come back remains. Perhaps they live as manifestations in Sidney's consciousness, like a prior storyline. Alternatively, perhaps they are in some way still living in a strange shared scenario. The possibility of a self-referential story, inspired by classic horror movies, also is on the table.
Moviegoers will discover the answer when Scream 7 arrives in theaters.
