Novak Djokovic Issues Caution to Jannik Sinner: Suspension Will Follow Him Like a "Shadow"
Novak Djokovic has cautioned Jannik Sinner that his three-month ban for doping will linger over his career as a constant shadow – and raised doubts about the timing of the penalty last year.
Details of the Suspension
The Italian player served a three-month prohibition in early 2025 after the World Anti-Doping Agency accepted his explanation that a banned anabolic steroid, clostebol, had entered his system accidentally.
"This shadow will trail him just as the cloud of Covid will follow me, for the remainder of our respective careers," Djokovic stated in an interview on a popular YouTube program.
"It's just something that, it was so major, and after such events, with time it may lessen, but I don't think it will disappear. There's always going to be a specific segment of individuals that will always try to bring that forward."
The Champion's Viewpoint
Djokovic expressed belief that Sinner, a regular practice partner, "didn't do it on purpose", but he then scrutinized how the player arranged to serve his time without sitting out any major tournaments.
"There is the lack of transparency, the irregularity, the convenient timing of the suspension coming between the slams, so he avoids skipping important competitions – it simply appeared highly unusual," Djokovic added.
Wider Player Reactions
"I am dissatisfied with how the situation was managed and you could hear so many other players, both male and female, who had some similar situations coming out in the media and asserting it represented favorable handling."
