Israelis mark two-year anniversary of 7 October attacks as Gaza ceasefire negotiations continue
Israelis have gathered around the country to remember the second anniversary since the Hamas-led attack on October 7th, 2023, as negotiations proceeded in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the war in Gaza.
The incident resulted in in excess of 1,200 people killed and 251 others captured back to Gaza as captives. It was the uniquely most fatal day for Jews since the Second World War.
Israel responded by launching a military offensive in Gaza which has claimed in excess of 67,000 people, as reported by the region's Hamas-run health ministry. Its statistics are regarded as trustworthy by the United Nations and other world agencies.
"The bloodthirsty opponents have hit us hard, but they have not overcome us," Benjamin Netanyahu added on that day.
He also pledged to "realize all the objectives of the war: the homecoming of all the captured, the removal of the Hamas regime and the promise that Gaza will never again create a threat to Israel".
Commemorative Ceremonies Across Israel
The national leadership rescheduled state memorials until mid-October - after the end of the Jewish High Holiday season - but ceremonies still occurred throughout the country on that day.
A commemorative event for the families of Israelis killed in the Hamas attack was held in the coastal city. Arranged by the affected families, it was aired on Israeli broadcast stations.
A period earlier, a silent tribute was observed around the country.
Negotiation Discussions in Egypt
At the same time, the conflicting parties' representatives convened in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of the negotiation venue for a continuing round of mediated discussions to discuss the conditions of the agreement.
A high-ranking Palestinian official familiar with the negotiations said that an night meeting of negotiations commenced at 19:00 Cairo time.
The representative explained the earlier meeting ended without concrete outcomes, amid conflicting views over the suggested Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas demands to ensure Israel does not recommence hostilities after the initial stage of the agreement.
He added that the negotiations are "tough and have yet to achieve any significant progress," but pointed out that facilitators are making efforts to narrow the differences between the both parties.
Essential Matters in Talks
- An enduring ceasefire
- The exchange of the prisoners still detained by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
- The withdrawal of military personnel from Gaza
- Arrangements for assistance provision
- Post-war governance of the area
Public Reaction
In the city's public square that day, 29-year-old a woman - whose sibling lived through the assault on the outdoor event, where 378 people were murdered and many more were abducted by Hamas fighters - told: "No place appears as home now and until all the hostages return no one will feel safe."
"When we see everybody home again, we can feel relief once more. Then we can commence rebuild," she continued.
Outside the prime minister's official dwelling in Jerusalem, people assembled to express their support for the families of the hostages. Israel says forty-eight continue in captivity in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are considered to be living.
Activist a participant remarked: "It's necessary do any agreement required for the abducted to be released. But we truly desire promises that we will be safe."
Opinion polls now consistently show that approximately 70% of the population want the conflict to end in as payment for the freedom of the captives.
Gaza Conditions
At the location of the music event, grieving people came together to honor the dead.
From that location, the noise of military attacks and shelling could be noticed just a short distance away in Gaza, where local people indicated the heavy Israeli shelling persisted.
In the main city, air and artillery strikes were reported in the early hours of that day in the west side district, area and zone areas and in the eastern area of the community, as well Shati refugee camp to the north-west.
"Once the evening comes, the fear comes with it," evacuated urban resident a local woman, whose 17-year-old son was lost his life by an Israeli aerial attack earlier, shared.
"We are terrified of the bombings. Throughout the evening we are lying together, embracing, particularly my little child who puts his face on me the entire evening."
"Continuously we check the news to see what happened. And I'm afraid that this halt will not be finalized and that the fighting will resume to us."

The healthcare center in Gaza City announced it had taken in the bodies of six people by the midday, including several killed in an Israeli bombing in the south part al-Sabra neighbourhood.
