Formula 1 driver Liam Lawson stated he barely escaped a potentially deadly collision during Sunday's F1 event in Mexico when two marshals crossed the track immediately ahead of his car

The alarming incident occurred on the third rotation when marshals were spotted on the racing surface as Lawson was getting back on the race following an premature pit stop to change his damaged front wing

Driver's Immediate Reaction

Immediately after, the Formula 1 racer Lawson communicated to his race engineer saying: "Is this for real? Did you just see that? I might have... taken their lives"

"I truly couldn't comprehend what I was observing"

"I exited on a fresh hard compound tires, and then I got to Turn One and there were just two individuals running across the track"

"I almost collided with one of them, honestly, it was extremely hazardous"

Track Safety Questioned

"Obviously there's been a failure in communication somehow but I've never experienced that before, and I haven't previously witnessed that in the past. It's completely unacceptable"

"We can't understand how on a live track safety personnel can be allowed to just sprint across the track in that manner. I have no idea why, I'm sure we'll get some form of reasoning, but it really can't happen again"

Formal Inquiry in Progress

The sport's regulatory authority, the International Automobile Federation (FIA), is thoroughly reviewing the circumstances

"After an occurrence at turn one, race control was notified that fragments were located on the track at the apex of that corner" declared the governing body

"During the third lap, track officials were informed and made ready to access the circuit and recover the debris once every vehicle had gone by"

"Immediately when it was understood that Lawson had made a pit stop, the directives to deploy marshals were canceled and a caution signal was displayed in that section"

"We are still investigating what occurred subsequent to that time"
