A trio of officers perished and no fewer than 15 additional individuals were hurt in an apparently premeditated detonation from gas at a country home in northern Italy.

How It Happened

The blast was triggered as officers and emergency crews approached the house close to the city of Verona to carry out an eviction order for three siblings in their late 50s and mid-60s.

Each of the three victims who died were members of the Carabinieri force.

Arrests and Aftermath

Two individuals got detained at the scene and one more individual who ran away after the incident was found soon after. All three have been taken to medical facility.

The explosion could be heard some 5km (3 miles) away and images from the area revealed the building turned into a pile of rubble.

“This is a time for grieving,” stated the Minister of the Interior Minister Piantedosi, who added that efforts had been made to remove the three siblings in the past.

Property Situation

The president of the region of Veneto, Luca Zaia, explained the property was under an removal notice due to financial obligations incurred by the three owners.

Conflict resolution experts had been sent to speak to the brothers and sister who had secured themselves into the house. When the police arrived soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials suspect a family member triggered the detonation.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” regional commander Claudio Papagno stated to news outlets.

A propane tank had been activated, and the blast immediately struck our officers,” he said.

Incendiary devices were also located at the property, the Interior Minister said.

Impact Assessment

Those injured by the incident consisted of an additional 11 personnel of the military police as well as three members of Italy's state police and a firefighter.

According to the Verona prosecutor, the building was in a derelict state and had no electricity.

He thought the detonation had taken place on a story above the entrance and informed reporters it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Shortly before the blast, he revealed personnel had “heard a whistle, probably the propane tanks being activated”.

Neighbor Statements

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” nearby inhabitants told reporters, adding that the family members had earlier warned to “cause an explosion” rather than vacate the property.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

Minister of Defence the Defence Minister stood alongside other elected representatives in commemorating the trio of personnel who had died in the line of duty.
